Name is 'Choice of heart' (O)

Prologue
----------
It was yet another bright
and sunny day here in Mahogany. I like the mornings here. The sun beats down on
the brown rooftops and dries away the dew in whisps of steam, leaving the
spider's webs blank and unoticable once again. Smoke from the chimneys dance and
twirl among the treetops. Most people don't notice things like that. I do.
That's my trouble.
I'm probably the only one whole notices the small
and wonderful things in life. Trouble is, I don't concentrate on the bigger
things, the important things. And I hate making choices. And this is what this
story is about. A choice I had to make.
OK, I'll tell you about me. I was a pretty and
'darling'-- so old ladies called me-- and I liked being one too. I had a trainer
called Rachel, aged 12, and she spoils me rotten. I agree on that, but do I
care? I like being spoilt.
I was spoilt because I was Rachel's only pokemon.
And I could fight really good, if I kept my mind on it. We hadn't set out on a
journey then-- and I was glad, because I loved living in Mahogany, watching the
mornings and getting free food from old ladies.
My name is Cosette. It's french or something. I
like it, and those old ladies seem to like it to, when they look at my collar.
They then scoop me up and carry me home, thinking I've got lost. I don't ever
get lost. Rachel knows a like to go for a walk in the mornings.
Anyway, It was a bright and sunny day here in
Mahogany Town. As soon as I came home from my morning stroll, I was pounced on
by Rachel. I snuggled up in her arms, and let her scratch my ears. Then she
whispered, "Today's a special day, Cosette. Do you know why?"
I looked into her liquid amber eyes and shook my
head. "No," I said. I don't know if she understands me, but she seems to. And I
hadn't any idea what was different about today. Free meal at Burger
King?
"It's special because we are selling stones at the
summer fete in about a week," continued Rachel.
I like fetes. Full of old ladies. Full of food,
too. It's easy to grab a hot dog when someone's back is turned. By why special
today, when the fete is in a week?
"And we have two of nearly every single stone," she
whispered.
I wasn't catching on. The 'special thing' had
nothing to do with the coming to the fete then. I urged Rachel to go
on.
"So, daddy says you can use one of the seven stones
to evolve! It might be your only chance! You can choose what you want to be!"
squealed Rachel.
Ah. A choice. I told you I can't do choices. But if
the fete's in about a week...
"And you have eight days to decide, if you want
to," said Rachel, as if she could hear my thoughts.
O-K. So I choose between seven stones, since there
are seven Eevee evolutions That use those seven stones. I have eight days to
choose. Man, I hate choosing!
"Would you like to in a week and a bit instead of
now?"
I nodded. That would give me a little more time to
choose. I mean, this might be my last choice to evolve. And if I make the wrong
desision, I can't go back. I never thought of it like this before.
"I'll leave you to think it over then. Come on,
breakfast!"
I followed her eagerly. I always had hot buttered
toast for breakfast. Mmmmm.
When I had finished, I spent the whole day
pondering about it. I went for a walk with Rachel, and we got challenged several
times. I beat all of the pokemon. It takes more than a Kingler to bring the
mighty Cosette down.
Then another thought struck. I don't have any real
weakness, except fighting, so I'm okay fighting nearly every type. If I evolve,
I won't be, so Rachel will capture other pokemon and maybe put me in a pokeball!
I won't be the spoilt one any more. Some Rattata will. Might as well make the
most of it now.
Maybe Umbreon's my best bet. That's only weak to
fighting types, and has strengths too. Psychic pokemon and ghosts wouldn't have
a chance.
But I've always wanted to be an Espeon. They're so
graceful, and I could freeze any attacking pokemon in their tracks. Plus I'd
look really cute. The old ladies wouldn't get enough.
How about Flareon? I wouldn't have to take baths,
that's for sure. And they look beutiful too, though no more pinching on the
cheeks. I've heard it can get a bit hot though.
OK, think Vaporeon. I'd be able to swin really
well, and beat Rachel at summer camp. I could freeze as well as blast, but no
excuse for missing out on baths. I might actually like them then
though...
Er, Jolteon then. Yeah, shocking electricity.
If I have a bath, no-one's going to wash me behind the ears... not when the
water's high-voltige! But Rachel might not want a spiny porcupine on her
lap.
Let's try Sabereon. Sabereon can't have baths, and
it's the strongest of the evolutions. But it's not exactly cute. And I won't fit
in Rachel's lap.
Last of all, Feraleon. I could make flowers
appear... Cute! Yup, the old lady sindrone again. Cosette suits a Feraleon. But
Feraleons can't eat meat. No bacon...
The more I thought about it, the worse the choice
got. By the time I was going to bed, I was completely lost in a maze of choices.
Oh well. Seven days to think about it. For now I'll get some shut eye. Thinking
hard makes me sleepy.
I had a weird dream. In it, I was walking through
the forest, when I came to a wishing well. Corny or what? But then Mew came, and
Mew said; "Problem, Cosette?"
"Yeah, in seven days I have to choose between seven
evolutions. I don't know what to choose!"
"Why don't you try one each day?" said
Mew.
"What?" I asked, completely baffled.
"When you wake up, you will be a random evolution
of Eevee. The next day, you'll be another. But no-one in the village will notice
anything strange about this. They'll just assume that you've always been what
you are on that day. Understand?" said Mew.
"Er, I think so..."
"You'll see. Do you want to try it? The seven days
will still pass, in case you're wondering."
"Yeah, I'll take that then," I said, and as soon as
I did the world dissolved, and when I woke up, everything seemed
different.
