The Shinigami's wings are tattered, he thinks, silky black feathers cut into jagged patterns. It should frighten him, the way those yellow orbs with red pupils stare at him, but Mikami is beyond such petty feelings. He likes to think that he is beyond fear. He eyes the creature, even as it lists the rules for using the Death Note, and with a sly grin, mentions the eye trade that allows one to kill more effectively. He takes it of course, because this way, Kira will find him valuable, because he is the Chosen One.

A few months later, when he is locked in his cell and his soul is in shreds, he realizes the irony of the situation. If not for these cursed eyes, he would never have condemned his god to death, and the tears that finally fall are blood red.

Small wonder his sanity is in pieces the next day.
