Lance plays favorites. He does it quite shamelessly, actually, because he’s Dragon Master and Champion and he doesn’t give a damn what everyone else thinks. He uses dragon pokemon because he can, because they’re rare and powerful and stunning, and he doesn’t care what they whisper.

Red is Lance’s favorite too, because Red is Champion and so far, the only person who’s managed to defeat him. Lance can be very charming when he wants to, so he cuddles and coddles, and holds Red close so no one else can steal him away, and keeps him for himself.

Red is Lance’s favorite person.

Red knows all of this, and he likes it this way, because Lance is his favorite too, so everything is perfect.
