Chapter 17
The Master of Illusions
Andrew put away his Pikachu in exchange for Tropius.
"I don’t need you," he said, "until the gym battle."
Julia and Andrew quickly flew to Mauville once they mounted Tropius. Andrew recalled his Grass Pokémon and then walked with his sister to the Trick House, right where the man in Fortree said it would be.
The house itself was long, but otherwise, not very big. In fact, it looked like a normal house. The only reason Andrew and Julia knew it was the Trick House was because of the sign in front that read, "Trick House."
They walked in, and were confronted with a halls of mirrors. It was, apparently, a maze.
"How are you supposed to find your way through a maze," Andrew said to his sister, "that is composed of mirrors?"
"I don’t know, but I presume this is some sort of test."
They walked cautiously through the Hall of Mirrors, until they got to a fork.
"We should split up to get more done," Julia said, "but then how would we find our way back?"
"Mark the mirrors," Andrew responded. "You have something to mark mirrors with, right?"
"Lipstick."
"There you go. Use that. I’ll use…uh…" Julia handed him another stick of lipstick. "Gee, thanks."
"If you don’t want to carry around lipstick, fine. Don’t mark mirrors." Andrew didn’t reply, and took the right side of the fork. Julia took the left.
Andrew walked down corridor after corridor, until finally he reached a very tall mirror. He looked at the mirror and saw someone standing behind him. It was Luke.
"What the—" Andrew whipped around, but didn’t see anyone. He looked at the mirror again. Luke was standing there, still, and then started to laugh.
The next image Andrew saw was of him—or at least, what looked to be an older version of him. This "future Andrew" was wearing a black trench coat, and chasing after a man. Andrew caught him, and retrieved a purse. Andrew was fighting crime.
"The hell?" Andrew pondered.
Suddenly, the image swirled around, and was engulfed in black. The next image Andrew saw was of himself, again, but the sky was completely black. There was lightning and rain. He was fighting in this scenario, but Andrew couldn’t make out what he was fighting. But then, this image disappeared, also, and Andrew found himself staring at a Metagross, a red bird Pokémon, himself, and Luke. Out of nowhere, a golden beam was fired at the illusionary Andrew, destroying him. The two Pokémon soon followed.
In horror, Andrew backed up and ran away, following his markings on the mirrors. He then followed his sister’s marks, and caught up to her.
"What’s with the rush over here?" she questioned.
Andrew gasped for air. He couldn’t tell his sister that he just saw his death—and possibly the death of Julia. "It’s uh…not the right way."
"Okay, then, we can keep going this way, I suppose." Andrew followed his sister down seemingly endless halls of mirrors until, finally, they came to a final mirror. Problem was, as they quickly found out, it didn’t reflect anything.
"Then it can’t be a mirror," Andrew said, and touched the "mirror." A ripple occurred on the door. He tried sticking his hand through, and, to his surprise, succeeded. Andrew proceeded in walking through the door, and into a small room. Julia followed.
A bald man was sitting in a chair at a table, playing Solitaire. He was oblivious to Andrew and Julia.
"Ahem," Julia spoke up.
"Aah! You startled me! How did you get here? You didn’t get past the Hall of Mirrors, did you?" the man said, shocked.
"Yeah," Julia replied.
"What about the Hall of Illusions?"
"I don’t think I went there…did you, Andrew?"
Andrew didn’t want to say anything. The image of his supposed death haunted him. It kept replaying, over and over.
The man leaned over to Andrew. "It was only an image of what may come, not what will come, kid." Andrew nodded. "Well, at any rate, I am the Trick Master, and for reaching me, I will do something for you. What would you like?"
"We need to get into Fortree’s gym," Julia started, "but there’s something invisible in the way.
"Ah, well, in that case, you need the Devon Scope. Here: take it," said the Trick Master. He handed them a small telescope. "Look through it and you’ll see what’s blocking your view."
"Thanks," Julia responded.
"No problem." As they were walking out the back entrance to his house, the Trick Master added, "Oh, by the way, if you need anything else, don’t hesitate to ask!"
"Thanks," Julia said, and they left.
Andrew and Julia walked away from the Trick Master’s House, and found a small nursery for Pokémon.
"We should stop by here," Julia said, "and look at the Pokémon they have."
"It’ll be a waste of time."
"Come on, Andrew. While we’re here…"
Andrew sighed. "All right, fine, whatever."
They walked over to the nursery, where they found all sorts of Pokémon playing. Andrew walked over to an aquarium. There was a small brown fish in this.
"What sort of ugly, worthless Pokémon is this?" Andrew queried.
A woman walked over to him. "That Pokémon is Feebas. If you treat it right, it will evolve into one of the most beautiful and most powerful of all Pokémon," she answered.
"Doesn’t look too special to me."
"To the young and untrained…yes." The woman walked away.
Andrew walked over to his sister. "Let’s go, this is boring," he said. She, unwillingly, agreed.
"But in compromise," she interjected, "we enter a Pokémon Contest."
"A Pokémon Contest?"
"Oh, yes. You try to show off your Pokémon for a chance at Ribbons!"
"Whoop-de-do. Where is it?"
"Veranturf."
"Ah. Well, I want to be fighting Winona by tomorrow, so let’s head over there now."
Julia and Andrew left the nursery, and headed west to visit Veranturf again.
